Year Here Summer School

Are you 17 or 18? If you want to build up your CV and learn about how you can apply your skills to solving social issues in the UK, then the Year Here summer school is for you. The summer school is a free part-time programme taking place on Fridays throughout the summer. The summer school is run in partnership with Student Hubs’ ethical internship programme.

Why take part?
The Year Here summer school will offer you the following benefits – all at no cost:

* An opportunity to learn skills that will prepare you for university, college or work with leading organisations like Teach First, Student Hubs and UnLtd;
* Great material to add to your CV or personal statement; and
* The chance to meet other young people like you interested in learning and development – as well as other people who are 2-3 years older than you and can offer practical and useful advice for your next step.

What’s involved?
The summer school programme consists of four elements:

* Training – 7 workshops on critical skills areas such as fundraising, social enterprise and leadership.
* Mentoring – a University student mentor to support you to consider your next education career steps.
* Careers advice – Coaching to help you improve your CV and put yourself ahead of the crowd.
* Design workshops – Creative sessions to develop aspects of the Year Here venture.

The summer programme runs every Friday from 29th July to 2nd September. Most sessions take place in the afternoon only (from 1pm or from 3pm) apart from Friday 26th August, when we’ll be starting at 10am.

Who can apply?
The Year Here Summer School is for people between the ages of 17 and 18 who are interested in building their professional skills.

We are looking for people who are:

* Mature and committed – you may currently do some volunteering or work with your local church group or take a grown-up approach to your studies.
* Interested in learning beyond school or college – you may have already taken part in extra-curricular learning or you think now is the time to get involved.
* Creative and entrepreneurial – you may have done something off your own back like organising a party or setting up a website.
* Open-mindedness and great teamwork – you may have worked with other people really effectively on a school project or outside of school.

How to apply
To apply to take part, you’ll need to fill in this super short and easy form that will ask you a few questions about why you want to take part.

After that, you’ll be invited to a workshop where you’ll have the chance to:

* learn more about the summer school and what it involves;
* meet the Year Here team and the other young people who are applying; and
* ask any questions you might have about the summer school.

You will also work together with your fellow applicants on a group exercise and have a short 1-to-1 interview with the Year Here director.

The application timeline is as follows:
Deadline for applications – Wednesday 20th July at 5pm
Workshop – Wednesday 27th July from 10am to 1pm

If you are successful in applying for the summer school, we will let you know on Wednesday 27th July whether you have been accepted. The first session is on Friday 29th July.
