Teachers at the recently formed Isle of Sheppey Academy have been working to boost the engagement and achievement of students by injecting enterprise into the curriculum with Enabling Enterprise courses in Business and ICT.
Responding to the enthusiasm of the students, teachers at the Isle of Sheppey Academy took the concept one step further by opening a shop of their very own on the main high street on the island for the six weeks running up to Christmas of 2010. BTEC Construction students prepared the area by painting and decorating the shop space in the Academy colours, and vibrant displays exhibited the work of the students.
Throughout the six weeks, students put their subject knowledge to good use, with food technology students running advice sessions on healthy eating, beauty students offering salon treatments, and ICT students giving training in computer skills. Students set up businesses to sell handmade gifts, and sixth formers worked to compile an online business directory to raise the profile of local enterprises.
Finally, staff and students worked to introduce the concept of Pay It Forward to the island, whereby they did favours for members of the local community and asked them to repay the favour to somebody else. The students greatly enjoyed themselves, and we were impressed by the ideas of these budding entrepreneurs!
